SOCI 036F. Gender, Race, and Family: Experiences of Asian Americans This course will explore Asian American experiences regarding gender, race, and family from a sociological perspective. In the first unit of the course, we will build a theoretical foundation by learning key sociological theories related to gender, race, and family. In the second unit of the course, we will discuss a wide range of contemporary topics such as racial and ethnic identities, interracial and interethnic dating and marriage, parenting style and education, anti-Asian racism, “model minority” myth, “bamboo ceiling” By taking a sociological approach to learning about the gender, race, and family and by gaining knowledge about empirical trends and patterns of Asian Americans in contemporary society, this course will give students the theoretical and empirical tools to understand how broader social forces shape individuals’ work and family life (often in gendered ways) in non-western contexts.
