MUSI 017. Introduction to Orchestral Conducting This course aims to give students a basic foundation in orchestral conducting. Each week, we focus on new elements of score study and conducting technique, building from four part chorales to complex orchestral scores. We explore the role of the conductor through history and work to develop a personal philosophy of conducting and musical interpretation in the 21st century. We also work to develop fluency in score reading (including C clefs and transposing instruments), both through singing and at the piano. Students will have the opportunity to conduct small ensembles of student musicians several times during the semester. Prerequisite: MUSI 012, or permission of the instructor Humanities. 1 credit. Fall 2026. Hauze. Spring 2027. Hauze. Catalog chapter: Music Department website: http://www.swarthmore.edu/music
