CPSC 091R. Special Topics: Human-AI Interaction Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications are widespread and already transforming nearly every aspect of society. As AI becomes even more broadly embedded in software, user interface considerations must be included in the AI system development process. This class introduces the unique interface design challenges presented by AI. It explores questions of usability and user experience specific to AI systems, and it reflects more broadly on the relationship between humanity and emerging technologies. Students will practice skills in design, research and writing regarding the human side of AI. We will cover a number of general topics: agency and initiative, AI and ethics, bias and transparency, confidence and errors, human augmentation and amplification, trust and explainability, and mixed-initiative systems.
Students will complete weekly mini-projects and a final project in which they will design and build AI systems across a wide variety of domains. Students should be comfortable with programming; assignments will be primarily in Python and Javascript. Prior experience with AI/machine learning will be useful but is not required. Students will also be responsible for weekly readings and occasional presentations to the class. This is a Group 3 course. Natural science and engineering. 1.0 credit. Spring 2026. Venkatagiri.
