ENGL 001G. Writing With Genres Written genres both respond to and structure a writer’s experience of audience, purpose, structure, style, and voice. This course aims to teach students how an understanding of genres (as an organizing principle of disciplinary ways of inventing, writing, and thinking) can not only improve academic writing, but can also make evident the tacit knowledge and skills required to join different discourse communities. Together, we will investigate the values at work within communities that shape genre expectations. We will also explore the rhetorical work of genres-allowing us to reach audiences within and outside of academe. With this rhetorical work in mind, each semester, the course may pursue a theme, such as Genres of Dissent, Genres of Discovery, or Voice and Genre. Contact the instructor for theme details. This course is open to all students and offers an opportunity to develop skills as college writers. Through frequent practice, class discussions, and in-class activities, students will become familiar with all aspects of the writing process and will develop their ability to write academically.
