FMST 049. Screening Philadelphia This course considers how Philadelphia has been mediated and imagined in cinema, popular culture, and US history. We explore Philadelphia’s key role in early film’s emergence, in framing ideas about black lives, and its potential for opening up questions about the cultural geography of cinema and media. Critical attention to onscreen representation, from sitcoms to documentaries to Hollywood film, will be complemented by historical research and ethnographic fieldwork, drawing on our proximity to the city.
