ANCH 032. The Roman Republic This course studies Rome from its origins to the civil wars and the establishment of the principate of Augustus (753-27 B.C.E.). Topics include the legends of Rome’s foundation and of its republican constitution; the conquest of the Mediterranean world, with special attention to the causes and pretexts for imperialism; the political system of the Late Republic, and its collapse into civil war.
