MUSI 035. Foundations of Ethnomusicology This course provides an introduction to the history, methodologies, and theories of ethnomusicology. Through review and analysis of past case studies, we will discuss the development of the discipline, engaging with fundamental questions about the relationships among music, culture, scholarship, and advocacy. This course material and assessments will be designed in an interdisciplinary fashion, drawing primarily from music analysis and the social sciences. In addition to individual and collaborative assignments, students will produce ethnographic portfolios of a nearby group or community to be presented at the end of the semester. Humanities.
