ASTR 129. Cosmology Cosmology is the study of the overall structure, history, and future evolution of the universe. This seminar will cover the following topics: the distance ladder; Hubble’s law; Einstein’s general theory of relativity; Friedmann models of the Universe; high-red-shift supernovae; the cosmic microwave background; dark matter and dark energy; the early universe including big bang nucleosynthesis and inflation; the age of the universe and the “Cosmic Concordance.” Prerequisite: ASTR 016 , or PHYS 013 and PHYS 017 .
