RUSS 014. The Russian Novel, Part II: Revolution, Terror and Resistance

(Cross-listed as LITR 014R )
This course surveys the Russian novel during the twentieth century, from the years leading up to the Bolshevik Revolution, through the Soviet era, and into the post-Cold War period. Works include Andrei Bely’s modernist novel Petersburg, Yuri Zamiatin’s sci-fi dystopia We, and Mikhail Bulgakov’s Faustian masterpiece Master and Margarita. In addition to exploring ideas of genre and artistic strategy, particular focus will be paid to the ways in which these and other authors resist the terror and repression of their respective eras.
