PSYC 105. Research Practicum in Psychology and Neuroscience: Social Imitation In this course students conduct research projects singly or in small groups in collaboration with the instructor. Projects include designing, implementing, analyzing and reporting an experiment. Project topics are negotiated at the beginning of the semester but will generally focus on topics related to social imitation, including why we tend to imitate others, what purposes social imitation serves, the consequences of social imitation for the experience of empathy, how imitation may give rise to emotional contagion, and how interpersonal factors such as similarity, attractiveness, and race bias may affect imitation. All students meet together for a weekly lab meeting; additional weekly meeting times will be scheduled. When taken in the senior year, this course fulfills the comprehensive requirement in psychology. This course may not be taken as pass/fail. Prerequisite: PSYC 001 ; PSYC 025. Research Design and Analysis ; either PSYC 031A. Social, Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience or PSYC 035. Social Psychology and permission of the instructor. Social sciences. 1 credit. Fall 2017.
